Gather Your Supplies:
Before you dive in, make sure you have everything you need:
- Heat Gun
- Knife and Scraper (for side windows only!)
- Spray Bottle with Soapy Water
- Microfiber Cloth and Paper Towels
- Goo Gone (or similar adhesive remover)
Step 1: Loosen the Tint with Heat
The key to easy removal is loosening the adhesive that holds the window tinting to the window. Use your heat gun on a low setting and move it steadily across the entire windowpane. Be careful not to hold the heat gun in one spot for too long, as this could crack the window.
Step 2: Carefully Peel the Tint
Once the window is warm to the touch, find a corner of the tint and gently begin to peel it away from the glass. If the window tint tears, don't panic! Simply re-apply heat to the stubborn area and try again. For even easier window tint removal, consider using a steamer to further soften the adhesive as you peel.
Step 3: Clean Up the Adhesive
With the window tint removed, it's time to tackle the leftover adhesive. Spray the window with soapy water and scrub with your microfiber cloth. For stubborn residue, Goo Gone or a similar adhesive remover can be helpful. Important Note: When cleaning the rear windshield, avoid using a scraper blade. The delicate electrical components embedded in the rear window defrost system can be easily damaged. Stick to using a steamer and Goo Gone for this area.
Step 4: Final Touches
Inspect the window thoroughly to ensure all the window tinting and adhesive are gone. If you find any missed spots, repeat the cleaning process until the window is crystal clear.
